French Bread Ingredients 1 tablespoon active dry yeast 1 1/2 to 2 cups warm water (115 degrees Fahrenheit) 4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour, plus more for kneading 2 teaspoons salt Directions In a big bowl, put the 1 1/2 cups warm water and add the yeast and the flour. Knead for 10 minutes or more until smooth. Put in a bowl and cover with a wet kitchen towel and let rise for 1 hour. Add the salt and knead for another 5 minutes and form into a log about 3" wide X 12" long. Cover with a kitchen towel and let rise for 30 minutes in a warm place. Bake in a preheated oven 450 degrees Fahrenheit for 17 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Cover with a kitchen towel and let rise for 10 minutes. In a big bowl, combine 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 4 tablespoons sugar, and salt. Add the yeast to the flour mixture with warm milk, oil or melted butter, and eggs to the flour mixture. Blend well until ingredients clump together and form into a dough. Knead on a floured surface by hand or use an electric mixer with the dough hook for 10 minutes or until smooth. Form into a ball and put into a greased bowl and let rise for 1 hour in a warm place.
